A driver was tackled to the ground after two pedestrians were seriously injured by an out-of-control car that ploughed into them along one of Melbourne’s busiest entertainment precincts.

Police allege an 18-year-old Kingsbury woman and a 63-year-old Caulfield South man are lucky to be alive after a man lost control of his vehicle on Chapel St in Windsor about 10pm on Thursday.

Ambulance Victoria transported the pair to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition with injuries to their upper and lower bodies.

Witnesses told police the car was speeding before hitting the pair and crashing into a brick wall about 50m south of Peel St.

A 33-year-old Windsor man tried to flee on foot but was tackled to the ground by witnesses and detained until police arrived.

A police spokesman said he returned a positive preliminary breath test for alcohol and was taken to The Alfred as a precaution.

“Once released, he was arrested and interviewed in relation to the crash,” a police spokesman said.

He is expected to be charged on summons with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving and other traffic offences.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
