India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, secured their place in the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 after delivering an impressive batting performance against the West Indies. With their semifinal spot confirmed, the Men in Blue are now just two victories away from defending their T20 World Cup title at home.

India will face England in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, March 5. The match will mark the third consecutive T20 World Cup edition in which the two teams meet. The Men in Blue defeated England in the previous edition of the tournament two years ago.

Rinku Singh to Replace Abhishek Sharma in India’s Playing XI?

India continued their preparations for the semifinal against England with an optional practice session on Wednesday, March 4. Rinku Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Tilak Varma, and Washington Sundar were among the players who attended the nets ahead of the crucial match. Abhishek was nowhere to be seen, which led many to believe he may be dropped.

Rinku briefly left the Indian squad during the ICC event to attend his father’s last rites. He rejoined the team before the match against the West Indies. The left-handed batter was not part of the playing XI for the must-win match. He was also not included in the XI for the Zimbabwe match.

Abhishek Sharma has struggled to make a big impact in the tournament so far. The left-handed opener has scored only 80 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 131.14, with a best score of 55 in a match against Zimbabwe.

India Adjust Top Order Strategy Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026 Semifinal

During the tournament, the team management decided to adjust the batting order to address a tactical concern. India initially had two left-handers opening the innings, with Tilak Varma also batting at No. 3. That allowed opponents to counter with off-spin bowling against the top order.

India restored a left-right combination at the top of the order. As a result, some batters shifted from their regular batting positions. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir sees this flexibility as a strength rather than a problem.

Gambhir believes that having players who can adapt to different roles provides the team with more options during matches. This flexibility allows India to respond better to different situations throughout the game. The pitch is expected to be flat, with a lot of runs likely in the upcoming match.

India and England Set for High-Stakes T20 World Cup 2026 Semifinal Clash

India reached the semifinals after finishing second in Super 8 Group 1 with two wins. England, meanwhile, finished at the top of Group 2 after winning all three of their Super 8 matches.

Out of 29 T20 internationals, India have won 17 matches, while England have secured 12 victories. In T20 World Cup contests, they have played five games, with India winning three and England two.

Both sides have had strong runs in the tournament, each losing only one match before the semifinal. India’s defeat came against South Africa, while England’s only loss was against the West Indies.

England will enter the match with a powerful squad capable of changing the game quickly. Notably, the winner will move a step closer to becoming the first side to claim three T20 World Cup titles.
