India head coach Gautam Gambhir showed the highest kind of leadership quality when he praised Rinku Singh for having shown extraordinary character and courage to be present with the Indian team after the sudden demise of his father. He extended his and the entire team’s support. for the young Indian batter.

India are through to the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, and Gautam Gambhir would finally be relieved after India’s massive obstacle following the humiliating defeat to South Africa. Though Gautam Gambhir has been criticized, slammed, shamed, and more, the former cricketer has held onto his nerve very well.

Gambhir’s leadership had not been in better form until the team meeting before the crucial game between India and the West Indies. Keeping aside the team talks in the huddle, he addressed the personal life and character of Rinku Singh with great valor and lifted his morale amid the biggest turmoil of his life.

Gautam Gambhir turns into a great leader in the BTS talks with Rinku Singh

Rinku Singh, the Indian cricketer, has had an up-and-down season in 2025; however, he made a positive start to 2026, after having made promising performances for his domestic side UP in the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was reintroduced into the Indian side against New Zealand and then into the T20 World Cup squad.

With many young players like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Washington Sundar making their T20 World Cup debut this time, Rinku was one among them. Having played the first few matches, he did not get the best opportunities to fire.

Rinku was dismissed for a two-ball duck in the match against South Africa, and just the next morning, he lost his father, who was battling a terminal illness. Just a couple of days after losing his father, the cricketer returned to be part of the Indian camp for the vital clash at the Eden Gardens.

Gautam Gambhir addressed Rinku and praised him for his strength and character. He said, “Before I start, Rinku, it takes a lot of character to come and join the team. Remember that you’re not alone; the whole team is standing next to you during this hour. So stay strong.”

Gambhir motivated his players not succumb to pressure ahead of the West Indies clash

Gautam Gambhir has been known for his last-minute inspirations. Huddles are pretty common before the start of the game, but for Gambhir, this is his final conversation with his players, and he tries to motivate them all into giving their best rather than tipping them with any last-minute ideas.

“Guys, there’s going to be pressure; one thing is very clear. Make sure we don’t hide away from the pressure. We embrace it and face it. Anytime we feel we are under pressure, we take the positive route.”

“Enjoy playing this game; this is what you play the sport for, and this is what you have played for throughout your life for such knockout-type games at home,” Gautam Gambhir motivated the Indian dugout.

“Make sure we go out there excited, not under some kind of pressure. In the next 40 overs, if you feel the pressure, make sure we take the positive route. Enjoy it, enjoy playing for the country and most importantly, enjoy playing for each other,” the head coach energized the starting XI with a fiery huddle speech.

Will Gautam Gambhir bring in Rinku Singh on board for the semi-final?

Gambhir did not play Rinku Singh, despite the match being held at the Eden Gardens. This means he has picked Abhishek’s importance over Rinku Singh, which seemed obvious until yesterday, but the opener’s recent struggles have posed a question on whether he should be retained for the knockouts.

Moreover, as per some reports, the pitch of the India vs USA match might be used for the second semi-final. The pitch was extremely slow, and excess heat might crack it, helping the spinners to bother players like Abhishek. In such games, a stable start is often needed to be backed by strong finishes.

Hence, Rinku Singh, the finisher, could be an ideal swap for Abhishek Sharma, who has 80 runs in the 7 matches he has played in the World Cup.
