Australia has been knocked out of the 2026 T20 World Cup after their back-to-back loss against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, respectively. The Aussies were knocked out after the Zimbabwe vs Ireland match was washed out following their loss against the Lankan Lions. They have had a T20 World Cup to forget as they did not perform at their best.
The Aussies came in with an inexperienced bowling attack, with their premium bowlers Josh Hazelwood and Pat Cummins ruled out after sustaining different injuries ahead of the major tournament. The Kangaroos had a tough luck, as their regular captain Mitchell Marsh also missed the first two games after sustaining a groin injury ahead of the Ireland clash.
Australia finished off the campaign after a win in their final game against Oman on Friday. They chased down a target of 105 runs in 9.4 overs. They created a record of the joint-fastest chase in tournament history for a target over 100, tying with England, who did against the Aussies in the previous edition of the competition.

Australia’s next T20 captain named by Ashton Agar
While talking with ESPNcricinfo, Ashton Agar was asked about the next T20I captain for the next World Cup. Ashton Agar was asked, Who will be the next captain of the Aussies in T20Is at the next World Cup?, Agar replied, “That’s really tough. You know, I think it could be Josh Inglis in the T20 side. He’s got a really good cricket brain. I think he’s a batter who can bat anywhere in the order in T20 cricket.”

“He’s made T20 hundreds for Australia and franchise teams around the world. And he’s a keeper, so he’s got a good view of the things. Now, it might be difficult for a keeper to do that, but I think he might be the next one.”
Australia team going through a rough patch
Australia has plenty to learn from its mistakes, and they gather lot of experience from this edition of the World Cup. However, there have been talks that Mitchell Marsh will remain as the captain for the T20I side after their dismal performance in the marquee event.
They, since the 2023 ODI World Cup win, have failed to qualify for the final of any white-ball ICC events. They were knocked out in the Super 8 stages in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024, and then yet again suffered a defeat against India in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy, and are now out of the group stages.
Aussies mainly depend on an experienced pace trio
These are worrying signs for the Australian team; they have mainly depended on their three frontline pacers, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, and Pat Cummins. These three have taken the side on their shoulders in the bowling department, and whenever they have not come in big for the Aussies, the team has struggled, especially in big tournaments.
The middle-order batting has also been a concern with Steve Smith retiring from ODIs, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis out of form, and the transition phase of the Aussies has hit them hard against strong opponents.
